Joy The Baker’s Rooftop Picnic

There are so many good blogs that I follow and it’s a treat to “know” the authors via their online personas. But to actually meet them in person is a real treat. Joy The Baker offered her readers such an experience by inviting them to share cupcakes on a roof in downtown Los Angeles. Being local to LA – and a big fan of cupcakes – I was eager to participate.

The location for the event was the roof of a squat, two story building located in the wholesale district. An astro-turf carpet brought color and texture to the cement roof while bales of hay and umbrellas rounded out the whimsical, man-made-park setting. Pop-up tents bordered the edges of the “lawn” and covered some tables, chairs, and the buffet.

The buffet was elegant in its simplicity and caused some delicious consonance: cupcakes, chicken, cole-slaw, and cheese puffs. Oh, there were biscuits and pop-corn too. Tea, lemonade, and flavored water rounded out the menu. Everything was tasty indeed but the focus was on the cupcakes.

There were three cupcake varieties to choose from: Vanilla with Marshmallow and Rose Icing; Red Velvet with Cinnamon Icing; and Vanilla with Chocolate Icing. I was fortunate to try two of them, the vanilla with marshmallow and the red velvet, and can say they were quite delicious. I am imagining the the chocolate icing was all the rage as well but I didn’t get to taste it. I didn’t fret, though, because two cupcakes was more than enough to make me happy!

On top of the great food and beverage, Joy also dished out the hospitality by sharing good bags as goodie bags! As a parting gift, guests were treated to Baggus: colorful, reusable bags that fold up into little pouches.

Rounding out the event was a lot of meeting, greeting, and networking. I was glad to run into my friends and fellow bloggers Josh of Food GPS and Chrystal and Amir of The Duo Dishes. I follow both blogs daily and swap emails with them on occasion.  While its great to share virtually, its always nice to chat in person too!

Oh, be on the look out for a review of CW and Chris.  They provided the cripsy, tasty, fried chicken. I have to give a big thanks to Joy, her friends and family, and her sponsors for putting on such a wonderful event!

  1. Missed the rose part in the vanilla cupcakes. Very interesting. It was great to meet in person though. You gotta love coming to LA for the smog. 🙂

  2. So glad you could make it! Did those cupcakes ever make it home!?

  3. OH, I’ve never been to LA. My stomping ground has been Philly. And how I wish I could one day know what Red Velvet (cup)Cake tastes like.

    Did someone say “smog”? Ewww.

  4. @The Duo – Yes! Was great to meet up with you guys. Looking forward to the next time.

@Joy – I had a great time! Yes, the cupcakes made it home. Thanks for keeping me honest!

@Yum Yucky – You’ve got to get to LA so you can see what’s going on out this way…smog and all! Oh, and come to the beach; we don’t have smog out here…just fresh ocean air and refinery smoke. 🙂
