Restaurant Week Preview: Seafood Selections Abound in Redondo Beach

DineLA’s Winter Restaurant Week starts on Sunday, January 23.  As the day draws near, we’re taking a look at the menus and deals at the participating restaurants around the South Bay.

Today we’re checking out several locations in Redondo Beach including a couple of my favorites, BALEEN and Ortega 120.  Come back tomorrow to see what’s on the menu in Torrance!

BALEEN is far from your typical hotel restaurant.  Located on the grounds of the historic Portofino Hotel, the vibe at BALEEN is perfectly in line with its motto: “Serious Food.  Whimsical mood.”  They’ll be serving dinner ($34) for Restaurant Week.

The appetizer selection is a toss up; the roasted beet salad, potato soup, and crispy oysters all sound amazing.  If I were pressed, I would go for the roasted beet salad if only to try the candied pistachios.

For the entree, I would bet without hesitation on the roasted mahi mahi.  The accompanying mascarpone grits bring to mind an elegant sort of fish and grits.

And I can testify as a witness that the chocolate lava cake is a must for dessert.

Ortega 120 is known for their modern Mexican cuisine, hella strong margaritas,  and eclectic decorations – i love the black and white movies projected on the walls!

With only the entree course offering an option, their Restaurant Week dinner ($26) selections are limited.  I would say go for the pepitas and get the pumpkin seed crusted snapper; the garnish is also featured in the appetizer.

At dessert, you should be pleased with their Protugese style donuts.  If you don’t think the donuts will work, go for their house made churros con chocolate which are out of this world.  However, the churros are NOT on the RW menu!

What ever you do, make sure you get their house margarita; its one of the best in LA!

Bluewater Grill Seafood Restaurant

Bluewater Grill is one of the few South Bay locations featuring lunch ($16) and dinner ($26).  The appetizers selection is limited with just clam chowder and a salad to choose from.  There is a choice of chowder though: New England or Manhattan.

Both lunch and dinner menus feature several choices for seafood.  Even though $16 is more than I would care to spend for two tacos, I’d pick the grilled swordfish tacos for lunch.  For dinner, I’d consider the mahi mahi served blackened.

If all that seafood is a bit too fishy for you, they also feature an Angus burger on both menus.

For dessert you have the option for a sweet or a glass of house wine.  With standard dessert options (creme brulee and a sundae), the wine might be a good choice.

Chart House

Chart House is another option for seafood lovers.  All three locations – Malibu and Marina Del Rey are also featured – are serving the same menu for dinner ($34) during the Restaurant Week event.

Tried and true selections are available including coconut shrimp, shrimp scampi, and every kid’s favorite dessert: “mud” pie.  If you have to drag a true carnivore along for the meal, they might be interested in the prime rib.
