Doma Kitchen Opens in South Redondo Beach

Doma KitchenOn my way home from work each day, I’ve been watching a spot on PCH in South Redondo that had a sign which stated “Local Café Coming Soon”.  After many months, I was happy to finally see that it was called “Doma Kitchen” and it was open at last.

Doma Kitchen’s parking lot is extremely small.  Only three slots are available and one is reserved for handicapped parking.  Fortunately, there is a lot of street parking on Gertruda Ave. behind the restaurant.

Owners Stan Mayzalis and Angie Corrente realized their dream by starting Doma Kitchen.  Angie is a designer by trade while Stan was in the construction business.  They combined their talents to make effective use of the space.

Doma means “home” in various Slavic languages and Stan and Angie wanted their customers to feel as if they were eating at their home.  The building they are in is very small and I think they made a wise decision by devoting almost the entire space to the kitchen.  Orders are placed at the counter and the seating is outdoors on the patio.

They’ve transformed the outside into a beautiful backyard setting.  The perimeter fence has an attractive wood stained finish and local artists have created colorful murals.  A variety of seating is available – traditional tables, communal tables and bar-height counter seating.

The roasted vegetable sandwich comes on a black olive roll and contains locally grown fresh vegetables.  The inside included fresh mushrooms, zucchini, tomatoes, eggplant and provolone cheese.  In my mind, their house made pesto sauce with parmesan really made the difference in the sandwich.  Artesian ciabatta bread covers the chicken sandwich.  It is seasoned with curry and contains fresh tomatoes and their house sauce.

I found out that Doma Kitchen sources their bread from Bread Lounge located in the Art District, Downtown LA.  The ciabatta bread is extremely crisp on the outside, but airy and soft on the inside; it flakes away when you bite into it.  The olive bread is more flavorful and equally crisp on the outside.  Nancy Silverton — who made Angelenos aware of how great bread can be and popularized gourmet sandwiches —  would be proud.

Kristina Miksyte is the chef for Doma Kitchen.  She is a European culinary school graduate.  Since graduating, she has worked at a number of different restaurants before coming to Doma Kitchen.

A request for a wine and beer license has been submitted by the owners.  Further, they plan to offer dinner soon.  Since their seating is exclusively outdoors, they plan to install an awning to shield their customers from the elements.

Doma Kitchen uses farmers market ingredients and antibiotic free meat.  Because of this, their menu varies depending on the time of year.

  1. This is a great spot to have a delicious meal in a relaxed atmosphere. My husband and I were vacationing in the area and we just happened upon Doma looking for a dinner spot. It would be a weekly dinner spot for us if we lived in the area. We definitely wish them well. The food was outstanding!

  2. Thanks for your comment, Robin! We always love to hear from folks that are passing through our neighborhoods and trying out some of the great cuisine. Cheers!
