Dominique’s Kitchen Celebrates their Second Anniversary

According to an Ohio State University study, approximately 60% of restaurants fail within their first year. Because of this staggering statistic, I’m happy when a restaurant I like beats the odds.  Specifically, Dominique’s Kitchen just celebrated their second anniversary!

Dominique’s Kitchen owes its success to the fact that the owners are very hands on. At any day of the week, you will see both Dominique and Liza Theval greet their customers with a smile and often with a warm hug. I like the fact that they have frequent special events like Bastille Day or winemaker dinners.

I enjoy celebrations so I made a reservation to join Dominique’s Kitchen for their special evening. My wife looks forward to dinner out on a weeknight, but I wasn’t sure about my 11 year old daughter. But when my daughter heard the menu, she quickly agreed.

That evening they offered a three course pre-fixed menu: potages garbure, beef bourguignon and tiramisu for dessert.

Orangina with a special addition

We were greeted with a complimentary glass of champagne. Liza served my daughter orangina with black currant syrup in a champagne glass and we toasted to Dominique’ Kitchen’s second anniversary.

Potages garbure is popular French soup made in the Basque region of France. The soup consisted of potatoes, white beans, sliced green beans, and a baguette topped with grated cheese. What made it memorable was the broth. Dominique included bacon and I enjoyed the difference that made.

The beef bourguignon must have been slow cooked for many hours. Despite it being a hefty piece of beef, it was fork-tender . It was accompanied with sliced carrots, mushrooms and celery. Creamy mashed potatoes were an excellent addition to the flavorful sauce.

Creamy tiramisu

Dominique’s offered tiramisu as the third course. It was sized appropriately considering how heavy the previous two courses were. It was fluffy and creamy and I ate every bite.

What I didn’t know was that they would be pouring free wines throughout the evening and so we didn’t have to open the wine we brought. My wife and I were very surprised at the quality of the wines being poured. My favorite was the Trinchero 2009 Merlot.

Here’s to many more years for Dominique’s Kitchen!
