Experiencing Mole of the Gods

Rocio'sIf you’ve taken Jonathan Gold’s Top 101 Restaurants of LA list and turned it into a bucket list, I’m sure you’ve had some interesting foodie adventures. While Mexican food isn’t typically an adventure in LA, I was recently surprised at Rocio’s Mole de los Dioses in Sun Valley.

When I talked about my great find with my friends, the first question everyone had is: where is Sun Valley? I was a bit surprised at each response and let them know that Sun Valley is just north of North Hollywood.

If you are a first-time visitor, the mole sampler is the way to go. Rocio’s offers sampler sizes of 3, 4 or 5 different types of mole. Ordering the sampler will help you decide which mole sauces you prefer. Rocio’s pairs the sample with organic nopatillas which are scratch-made from the Nopal cactus.

My wife and I were first served a small shot sized cup of shrimp broth with a small piece of white bread. I’ve never had this before and it was an interesting beginning to our meal.

Since this was our first time visiting Rocio’s Mole de los Dioses’, we ordered the five mole sampler with nopatillas. After tasting the five different mole sauces, we ranked them independently. While I didn’t record our results, we were similar on how we ranked the five sauces.

My wife ordered pechuga de pollo or simply, chicken breast. After it arrived, we noticed that it was pounded thin and grilled. It had a really nice smoky flavor from the BBQ grill. The smoky/sweet flavor with the mole sauce made for a truly amazing dish. My wife ordered it with their signature Mole de los Dioses sauce.

The chile relleno was stuffed with cheese and batter fried. The smokiness of the mancha mole sauce paired nicely with the mild chile relleno. After tasting my wife’s dish, it was difficult to decide which dish I enjoyed more.

Individuals on special diets will be pleased to know that Rocio’s uses organic and non-GMO ingredients to produce their moles.

Rocio’s menu is quite extensive and goes way beyond mole. They also have a Sunday brunch with traditional Mexican food and mole options.

I enjoyed the taste of the macha sauce so much that I ordered a pint of sauce to go!
