Happy Hour at Superba Food + Bread

z_signWhile it has been a bit slow for the build out of The Point in El Segundo, I’ve been pleased with the results. Due to good planning, there are some welcome additions to the South Bay dining scene.

Superba Food + Bread is located on the north east side of The Point. Parking at that location continues to be a breeze as I was able to find a space for my car steps away from the restaurant.

Nearing the restaurant, I noticed that Superba has outdoor seating in front. It is, however, flagged as a “no alcohol” zone.

My friend and I were there for happy hour. While they had stools by the bar, guests weren’t limited to sitting there and we opted for the more comfortable chairs in the dining area.

If you’re not familiar with their Venice location, you’ll quickly realize that they feature bread in a big way. I’m delighted that a number of LA area businesses are taking breadmaking seriously because it is the key to making a great sandwich.

The happy hour menu is somewhat modest. The drink menu is in twos: Two cocktails, two different craft beers and a choice of red or white wine is available to order.

The beer selection was either El Segundo Brewery’s DIPA or El Segundo Brewery’s ale offering. I selected the DIPA. I was delighted that it was extremely smooth and didn’t exhibit the hoppy character of many IPAs.

The three cheese plate was accompanied by a plate with a fresh baguette and a really nice knife, one with a tang and rivets. Seeing that type of a knife made me quickly realize that they know how frustrating it is to slice a baguette with a standard dinner knife.

Their bread is baked in their Venice location. The baguette is made from sprouted whole wheat flour (non GMO), their pain levin is made from wild yeast and rye flour and their sprouted wheat is made using flax seeds, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds. To distinguish it from sourdough, they refer to the bread as levin.

Avocado toast is the latest addition to many restaurant menus. A generous topping of mashed avocado tops a slice of bread. What makes it unique is their choice of adding pickled fresno chiles and topping it with spicy radish sprouts. This added a bit of heat to the otherwise mild dish.

Chicken Liver Mousse

The chicken liver mousse was neatly cut into a rectangle and presented like a dessert. After eating it, I found it to be very light and creamy. It was extremely unique because they spread a thin layer of apple jam on top and I thought the sweetness of the jam blended well.

Dagwood Burger

Dagwood Burger

I seldom eat burgers, but for some reason I ordered the Dagwood burger and we split it. It’s a double meat burger made with grass fed beef, tomato jam, sharp cheddar cheese, garlic aioli, and lettuce on a brioche bun. Among the field of gourmet burgers, this was fairly simple, yet I thought that it scored high on both taste and presentation.

While Superba Food + Bread is open from 9am – 10pm, they have separate brunch (9am – 3pm) and dinner (5:30pm – 10:00pm) menus. To fill the void between lunch and dinner, they offer happy hour from 4pm – 6pm. From 4pm – 5:30pm, diners are limited to ordering from the happy hour menu.

After checking out their brunch and dinner menus, I think a return visit is in order. With items like house smoked pastrami, shrimp and grits, crispy brussel sprouts in dashi with a poached egg and scallions, it certainly has my interest.
