Grimaldi’s Pizzeria, Two Years Later

OutsideMy wife and my daughter are pizza connoisseurs. If you ask either of them about any of the local pizza restaurants, you’re likely to receive a useful opinion. In fact, my daughter wrote about Grimaldi’s Pizzeria when she was only 10 years old.

Due to another generous gift certificate I received, my wife and I recently dined there. I’ll admit that it had been quite a while since we visited. When they first opened, a lot of the locals visited and they quickly dismissed the place as “too expensive”. For many, Grimaldi’s was going to be a special occasion destination.

Looking at the menus, we were both a bit surprised. It appeared that Grimaldi’s Pizzeria made a conscious effort to address the criticism that their prices were too high. The personal size pizza begins at $10; the small is $15 and the large is $17. It was even possible to order small or large salads during dinner.

The Bruschetta Trio is a new item listed on their starters menu and we decided to give it a try. Diners can pick up to 3 of the 4 options available. We selected the marinated mushrooms and roasted red pepper, classic tomato & basil and the marinated artichokes. The mini toasts were crispy and the toppings were tasty. Of the three, we both enjoyed the marinated mushrooms the most.

My wife took charge and ordered a small pizza with spicy chicken sausage, pepperoni, olives and roasted red pepper. For our beverage, we shared a bottle of wine. She remarked to me that even the wine prices are reasonable. A house wine is also  available in a carafe and many of their wines can be purchased by the glass.

In my opinion, Grimaldi’s crispy thin crust is one of the best there is. The sausage had good flavor and wasn’t too spicy. The fresh pulled mozzarella cheese was creamy and delicate. I wasn’t familiar with 6th Sense Winery but because it was a Lodi red wine, I figured it would be something I would enjoy. The wine was full of flavor with notes of plum and blackberry and paired quite nicely with our pizza.

We were surprised at how large our pizza was; in fact we took home four slices. When I woke up the next morning, I saw the edges of the crust in the waste basket. So much for our left-overs!
