It’s interesting to see how different passions can cross over, comingle, and complement each other perfectly. I was able to experience this first hand when Buick partnered with Food+Wine magazine for a test drive event at the swank St. Regis Monarch Hotel in Dana Point, CA.

Known as the Buick Discovery Tour, the event was well attended by foodies and car lovers alike. There may have been some disagreement between the two camps on what the highlight of the event was – the superstar chefs or the cars – but everyone still enjoyed themselves.

For the car lovers, the draw was the chance to get behind the wheel of one of Buick’s latest creations. Among the stunning vehicles that looked like works of art next to the equally beautiful St. Regis were the LaCrosse, the Enclave, and – the one I got to drive – the Buick Regal.

Along with stretching the legs of a brand spanking new car on Pacific Coast Highway, the foodies were excited about tasting food prepared by celebrity chefs Ben Roche of Moto in Chicago and Josiah Citrin chef/owner of Mélisse in Santa Monica.

The big name on the ticket, though was celebrity chef, Ming Tsai. He headlined the event with a demonstration on his now classic east-meets-west recipes and techniques. You may know him from his various apperanaces on Food Network and his current show, Simply Ming on PBS.

First up from Chef Ming was chicken chow mein. It featured thick, hearty noodles with green peppers, carrots, and a blanched chicken.

Chef Min Tsai's Chicken Chow Mein.

Next up was a sweet and sour pork served over rice. The treat with this one was its exclusivity: only six servings were prepared by Chef Ming himself. Everyone got to try the chicken chow mein but only a few lucky folks from the audience would get a chance to try the pork. To get in, audience members had to answer a question with facts from the Buick test drive and cooking demonstrations earlier in the day.

I was so fortunate to get the chance to answer a question and got it right! I slooooowly answered the question – recite the six S’s of wine tasting – to make sure I got it right: See, Swirl, Smell, Sip, Savor, and Spit…or Swallow!

Having answered the question correctly, I scored a bowl of the prized sweet and sour pork from Chef Ming himself. Of course, I had to take a picture.

Buick is continuing their Discovery test drive events and partnership with Food+Wine magazine. They’ll be coming to SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills this weekend (January 21-22). While the same chefs might not be cooking, I’m sure the food will be just as delicious. Oh, and the cars will be there to drive too!

* I was invited to this event by representatives of Buick. Buick Discovery Tour events are free and open to the public. However, registration via their website or at the event is required to attend and participate.

Money aside, this is also an opportunity to eat for a cause; proceeds from the event benefit the Cancer Support Community and the Redondo Beach Educational Foundation. Eat up!

Fiesta Hermosa – or the Beautiful Party, as I like to call it – is a 39 year old celebration that serves as the book ends of summer in the South Bay. This year’s occurrence starts on Friday, September 02 and wraps up on Labor Day.

Holding true to their reputation the largest craft fairs in California, this occurrence will feature more than 270 painters, photographers, ceramicists, jewelers, sculptors, and more.

Also keep an ear out for live music with a slant to old-school tribute bands. Neil Diamond, Journey, Steely Dan and more are all on deck for your listening pleasure. Follow this link for the complete schedule.

Best part about the music? At least one stage is in the Charity Beer & Wine Garden providing easy access to microbrews from the Hermosa’s own Union Cattle Company. Profits from the beer garden go to help non-profit organizations. Drink for a cause!

Spread out over four days and all over Los Angeles, there's no way attendees can get to every single happening that makes up this belt busting event. But who says you shouldn't try!?

The Los Angeles Times Food & Wine section must have more connections to restaurants, wineries, breweries and street food vendors than an AT&T switchboard has to cell phone users. How else could they pull off a four day long food festival with at least 9 events featuring unlimited tastings, wine, beer, and spirits!?

Los Angeles Times Food & Wine Present The Taste

Quoting their website, “The Taste is a four-day food and wine extravaganza, celebrating all things epicurean.” This event – more like collection of events – brings together top chefs, beverage makers, and foodies like you and me to do what we do best.

Better Than Other Food Events? Maybe!

I’ll be the first to admit it: this event is pricey! Each of the sub-events is $125 or more. I’m still filing this post under Cheap Eats though, because overall it’s a good deal.

Each event features unlimited tastes from at least 30 restaurants and 30 beverage vendors. Also, compared to other foodie events, this one is spaced out over days and has each event has a different focus. Find the right event for you based on your tastes buds, time of availability, and budget.

And to keep “budget” in the equation, make sure you use the promo code WEB to save 40% when you buy tickets online. That $125 ticket just got a little more affordable!

Make a Game Plan…and Wear Stretchy Pants

Spread out over four days and all over Los Angeles, there’s no way attendees can get to every single happening that makes up this belt busting event. But who says you shouldn’t try!?

Following is a breakdown of the events by day. For more details, check out The Taste events page on the LA Times website. For details on each event, follow the link behind title of the event.

This weekend, party like summer is going out of style...because it is! Here are a few things the South Bay Foodies are tracking for the weekend. Maybe we will see you there!

Yes, citizens of Southern California. All good things must come to an end. The final long, lazy days of the summer are waning away into the business of back to school, back to work, back to…, well, you get the idea.

That just means we have to take these next few weekends and party like the summer is going out of style. Here are a few things the South Bay Foodies are tracking for the weekend. Maybe we will see you there!

First Annual Long Beach BMX & Skate Park Jam and Contest at Houghton Park

X-Games fans will appreciate this local taste of high energy skating and biking. Here’s a chance to check out up and coming talent from around the South Bay and Long Beach. Kids can also get free lessons and tips from local pros. Details below, quoted from Inside District 9!

(Quoted from Inside Distric 9) “Councilmember Steven Neal and ASK Long Beach invite you to the first annual “Long Beach BMX Skate Park Jam and Contest at Houghton Skate Park.” The Skate Jam will highlight local Long Beach skateboarders as they compete for prizes.”

“Event co-sponsors include the Tony Hawk Foundation, Etnies and Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine. Long Beach Firefighters Association, Local 372, will provide hot dogs and refreshments. Skate Dogs Skateboarding Company will also provide skateboarding lessons for kids from Noon until 1 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis.”

Italian Festival at Power Fiat Grand Opening in Hawthorne

The cute, little cares from Italy are coming back and Power Fiat is celebrating with an Italian Festival. See the details below in a quote from the Daily Breeze Online. They’re right across the street from Costco so get your big box shopping done and then go get some gelato!

Partecipare alla festa! I mean, Join the party!, at the Grand Opening of Power Fiat in Hawthorne.

(Quoted from The Daily Breeze) “An Italian-themed festival will mark the return of the Fiat automotive line of Italian-made cars to the United States and the South Bay from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at Power Fiat, 14700 Hindry Ave., Hawthorne. The grand opening celebration will feature live music, entertainment, free face painting, gelato, and Italian and American cuisine provided by Valentino’s Pizza, Rosa’s Bella Cucina and Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs.”

“Power Fiat is presenting the festival in cooperation with the Hollywood Chapter of the Sons of Italy, UNICO Los Angeles, the city of Hawthorne and Gold’s Gym.”

Hermosa Beach Pier Concert Series Featuring “Hellogoodbye”

How appropriate! The last show of the Hermosa Beach Pier Concert Series is headlined by a group call Hellogoodbye. Hello, Autumn. Goodbye, Summer!

(Quoted from South Bay Events) “Somehow, summer is already winding down in the South Bay, which is a little depressing. Don’t let it go quietly and make sure you catch the 4th and final Hermosa Beach Concert on the Beach. This Sunday, August 21, Hellogoodbye will be performing on a stage just south of the Hermosa Pier for free!”

“Hellogoodbye provides high-energy emo/punk/indie rock that aways gets the crowd going. With an opening act by local artist Justin Hopkins, this promises to be a great way to wind down the weekend and the summer.”

Am I seeing back to school advertisements already!? Aw man, that’s a downer.

That’s not going to stop me and the other South Bay Foodies from enjoying another SoCal summer weekend. This one has plenty to choose from.

Here are a few of the events we will be checking out. Maybe we will see you there!

Navy Week Comes to the Port of Los Angeles

All this week, four Navy vessels have made the Port of Los Angeles their home. Navy Week — held in conjunction with the 2011 X-Games — brings the first aircraft carrier to dock in LA in more than 20 years.

This weekend Navy ships -- including the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln -- will be docking in the Port of Los Angels for the first time in 20 years.

The highlight of the event is the opportunity to tour each vessel for a close up look. Be warned, though, the turn-out for this event has been phenomenal and wait times (especially for the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln) are two hours or more.

Follow the links below for details on tours, parking, and more!

International Surf Fest

Surfers, and Lifeguards, and volleyball? Oh my! The beaches of Manhattan and Hermosa will be invaded this weekend (not to be associated with Navy Week) as the 2011 International Surf Festival takes place in the South Bay. Competitors from all over the world will paddle, swim, and bump/set/spike to be the best of the best in their sport.

A popular portion of the festival has returned: The Charlie Saikley “Six Man” Volleyball Tournament (link goes to Facebook). Teams of men and women — often dressed in outlandish costumes, or next to nothing in some cases — play volleyball while posing for the thrill of spectators. While Manhattan Beach police and officials have vowed to keep this event wholesome, know in advance that the 6 Man Tournament has a history of not being very family friendly!

Chocolate The Event

Chocolate lovers will find their dream event this weekend in Anaheim. Chocolate the Event promises to be a “myriad of epicurean and chocolate delicacies to tantalize and delight the palate”.

You can see their website for details….I’m not going to even try! Just imagine chocolate….everything! Wine, coffee, and other gourmet dishes will be available to sample along with the good stuff.

The event is free with attendees purchasing tickets to sample the chocolate cuisine throughout the venue along Center Street Promenade in Downtown Anaheim, CA.

Need a sweeter deal? The event is is a fund-raising effort for charities benefiting at-risk youth and children throughout the region. You’ll be eating for a cause!

Taking place at the Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort, the event spreads five bands out over six hours giving ale and lager afficiandos plenty of time to get through the lines at concessions without missing any of the show.

Admission to the event is just $15 and 16oz Kona beers will be going for $5, making the cost of the event worth the drive down to OC. BYO beach blanket but outside food and beverages will not be permitted.

For tickets and more information, check out the Liquid Aloha Website.
