Tonight Nicole asked me to slice a watermelon for her and, thinking of the mysterious peeled watermelon on the street carts, I decided to have some fun.  Should be easy to peel a watermelon, right?  Right! Well, mostly right.

An explosion of Greek hospitality ignited Long Beach over the Labor Day weekend, September 5^th – 7^th with the annual Greek Festival hosted by Assumption Greek Orthodox Church on Colorado St.  Celebrating 60 years as host of the ”Festival by the Sea”, the Assumption Church opened its doors to the community to share food, drink, entertainment, and their rich Hellenic culture.

If you’re looking for an intriguing place for brunch, consider Fuego at The Mayan Hotel in Long Beach.  The food is commendable and the setting alone is worth the visit.  The restaurant is open to the Long Beach harbor and has views from the skyline to the Queen Mary.  With a band just outside the dining room playing live salsa music, the mood is that of a relaxing day on the Mexican Rivera.

I’ve always been a fan of Iron Chef.  It’s one of those shows that exposes the art and passion that goes into the craft of creating really good food.  I always wondered what it would be like to take the stage in Kitchen Stadium, face my opponent, discover the secret ingredient, and hear the chairman yell “Allez cuisine!”.

That day has finally come.  Well, sort of.

For those of us that yearn to have just a few more peaches in the fruit salad, this is vindication;  a salad that emphasizes fruit with the focus on peaches and nectarines.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
