Manhattan Bread & Bagel: Easily my favorite bagel spot

It’s been a while since I had brunch on a weekday.  I skipped breakfast and was craving something breakfast-y but it was around lunch time.   I immediately thought of the delicious bagel creations over at Manhattan Bread & Bagel (MBB).

Today the store was packed with customers, no doubt buying breads, pies, and cookies for their Christmas dinners.  They have two counters in the store, one for bread and one for bagels, but today the bagel counter was closed to handle the influx of customers.  I waited about 15 minutes to order my obession:  Egg on a Bagel.

Their bagels are great by themselves, boiled and baked to perfection.  But they also make for a good sandwich.  I’m usually not a fan of bagel sandwiches — maybe its something about the texture of the bagel — but i love the breakfast bagels at Manhattan Bread and Bagel.  They start with a bagel of your choice, toast it lightly, then add a nicely poached egg, Canadian bacon, and American cheese.

While there are about two dozen flavors to choose from, I limit my choices but still have a hard time choosing between the blueberry, jalapeno, banana nut, and honey wheat bagels.  This time the honey wheat came out on top.  I also substitute regular bacon for Canadian and cheddar cheese for American.  The result is the perfect fix for a breakfast craving that happens to come right around lunch time.

Since I was on my way home, I carried my bagel out.  I’m not sure if this applies to other bagel sandwiches, but the ones at Manhattan Bread and Bagel stay warm for a long time.  The other times I frequent MBB is when I’m about to head to LAX for a flight.  I’ll pick of an Egg on a Bagel to go and carry it on the plane.  By the time we’re taking off two hours later, my bagel is still nice and warm.  I can’t really give all the credit to MBB — maybe its just the nature of a bagel to stay warm for a long time — but in my heart I’ll let them have it.
